Today’s challenge is: Get a certain or favorite lyric/s from your favorite song, and tell us how it inspires or describes you.
I had to really think about this one. I like music very much but I don’t get super passionate about particular bands or songs like my husband does. He will memorize every word of every song ever sung by an artist he loves. I can’t even tell you who sings half the songs I like. I heard them on the radio. I sing the parts I like. I make up random words to the parts I can’t quite understand.
So I asked myself, what songs do I find myself singing when there isn’t any music and I’m washing dishes or pulling weeds or just going on with the business of life?
It’s almost always hymns.
It’s not that I have any particular love of church music over other styles. It’s just that I’ve sung those songs so many times over the years, always with the correct words right in front of me, that they are burned into my brain. When I am an old woman who can’t remember her own name I’m pretty sure I’ll still know the words to, “We’re Marching to Zion.”
Once I narrowed down the field of contenders I thought about my favorite lyric. It’s got to be from the 4th verse of “Lord of the Dance.”
I danced on a Friday and the sky turned black; it’s hard to dance with the devil on your back…. Dance, then, wherever you may be; I am the Lord of the Dance, said he. And I’ll lead you all wherever you may be, and I’ll lead you all in the dance, said he.
I’m not sure I’ve ever actually sung that verse because it makes me cry every time.
The idea that, even hanging on a cross, being tortured and tormented for crimes he didn’t commit, Jesus continued to “dance” with the universe in unending love and joy…. that He could lead me to have that same beautiful peace…. it’s just about more than my poor bruised spirit can bear.
I realize that not everyone shares all of my beliefs about God and religion and so forth. I get that other people see things other ways and need to walk their own path, but the example of a Savior who would rescue us from our own brokenness and bring us to a place where we are so filled with light that we can’t help but whirl around in a beautiful, unending dance with the universe truly brings me to a peace that surpasses all understanding. I can only hope that others see that shine through me and give themselves over to the beauty of the dance.
