Change Your Lighting, Change Your Mood – a Moodies Review and Giveaway

Change Your Lighting, Change Your Mood - a Moodies Review and Giveaway | LazyHippieMama.comIs there a certain room where you feel happy, relaxed, stressed, productive or sleepy? Perhaps it is the color of the space that’s affecting you.

Studies have shown that people react in certain ways to differently colored spaces.  Being in a very yellow room can speed metabolism and increase concentration, but it is also linked with losing one’s temper while pink is so calming that some professional sports teams paint the visiting locker rooms pink to keep them mellow before a game.  In spaces that are blue people are more productive – so much so that weightlifters have actually been shown to be capable of lifting heavier weights in gyms that are blue!

It’s not just the paint colors that get to us.  The very light in a room can change our brain chemistry. A large study showed that people who slept in a room where they were exposed to blue or white light struggled more with depression, even though their actual sleep habits were not disturbed at all. On the other hand, red-tinted light didn’t bother them.

Have you ever wished that you could change or soften the light in a room for a romantic dinner or party?

If you don’t have the time, money or energy to remodel your room or buy expensive, colored lights Moodies may be just the ticket.

Moodies are silicone covers for light bulbs. They are made from the same heat-resistant silicone that bakeware is crafted from, so they are safe against the new “pigtail” lightbulbs* and they are super easy to use. You just slip them on over the bulb and tug them off again when you are done. When they originally reached out to me to see if I’d be interested in reviewing their product I had never heard of them. I had, however, read about the ways that the colors around us affect us, and so I was intrigued.

My camera isn’t great, so the images here don’t really do the color changes justice, but you get the idea.

The space, with regular lighting:

Yellow:

Red:

Blue (though, for some reason the camera makes it look much more green that it seemed in person):

Change Your Lighting, Change Your Mood - a Moodies Review and Giveaway | LazyHippieMama.com

Moodies come in every color you can think of and a few you probably wouldn’t. One of the covers we received didn’t change the light much at all. I thought, “well that one is kind of lame,” but then I turned the light off and it was glowing quite brightly in the dark! It would be perfect as a nightlight. Others, like the red and blue, created a very dramatic change.  With Halloween coming, I can think of lots of ways that making a simple change in lighting might be fun!

One place I’d like to give my new light covers a try is in my youth room at church. I have always hated the harsh fluorescent lighting in there. I think a lamp with a colored cover on the bulb would go a long way toward making the space warmer and more interesting.

Of course, my kids immediately wanted them in their bedrooms. Sweet Hippie Daughter liked the purple and Toddler-saurus Rex was partial to the green.

If you’d like to try Moodies, they are only about $3 each. I also have a few to share!

Leave a comment, below, or a “like” or comment on the Facebook post related to this post and I will enter your name in a drawing to win one.
What space do you think you might like to change the mood in with a fun colored light?

*Moodies ARE NOT designed to work over the old-style incandescent lightbulbs and are not safe used in combination with them!

ONLY ONE MORE WEEK UNTIL NOVEMBER!

Standard

Last November was life-changing for me.   My dreams and goals took a whole new turn.  My confidence in my own ability to accomplish something huge was strengthened in a big way. I pushed myself physically and mentally further than I had in years – and discovered (remembered?) that there’s something very satisfying in that.  I found a very special way to connect with both of my daughters. November became my favorite month of the year.

November = Nanowrimo!

All of that came about when I discovered Nanowrimo: National Novel Writer’s Month.

Only One More Week Until November! | LazyHippieMama.comI had vaguely heard about this idea the year before but I was a new blogger in a swirling sea of terms and language that was unfamiliar to me.  Last year I dug a little deeper and found out it works like this:  There is a website; Nanowrimo.org, where you sign up to participate.  You can plan and conceptualize all you want, but you’re not supposed to start your actual manuscript until November 1. Then, you have from 12:01am on the 1st until midnight on the 30th to write 50,000 words.  Everyone who hits 50,000 wins!  Prizes are, for the most part, things like free or discounted editing or graphic art help from well-respected professionals.

That’s it. Easy as pie, right?

I agonized.  I’d been cooking up a book for just about as long as I had the ability to string a sentence together.  I would start to write. I’d finish a chapter. I’d edit it. I’d write chapter 2. I’d go back and edit chapter 1. Then chapter 2 didn’t quite fit right any more so I’d re-write it.  By the time I got to chapter 3 I couldn’t remember how chapter 1 went.  I’m not sure I ever got past chapter 3.

What if I signed up for this and couldn’t do it? What if I did it and my book was terrible?

My husband, in his wisdom said, “What if? Who cares?”

Good point. If I failed, I failed. This is not the equivalent of failing at walking a tight rope over the Grand Canyon.  If, at the end of November I had only written 25,000 words of garbage… well… so what?

But what if I could actually do it?

That urge to go back and edit is the downfall of untold numbers of wannabe novelists.  It’s impossible to get to the end because you can’t get the beginning exactly perfect.  Nanowrimo is the cure for perfectionism.

In order to keep on-pace you need to finish 1600-1700 words every single day for a month.  Lord have mercy on your soul if you, like me, start late or miss a few days in the middle.  There is no time to spell check or re-consider whether or not the previous chapter creates a hole in your timeline.  It’s a sprint to the finish. Don’t look back. Just run as fast as you can.  Keep writing.  Did you change tenses in the middle of your story? Don’t worry about it. Just keep running.  Did your main character just switch ethnicity? Gender? Acquire a new name? Just keep writing.  Go, man, go.  Write like the wind!

It was totally and utterly exhausting. It sucked every bit of thinking power from my mind and I was consumed and obsessed with constant thoughts of my story world and what was going to happen next.

Only One More Week Until November! | LazyHippieMama.com

It was wonderful!

Last year, after throwing all my fears to the wind and jumping into the already boiling Nanowrimo waters on November 6, I wrote like I’d never written before. If I got stuck I just skipped that scene and went on. I wrote and wrote and wrote and then I wrote a little more and, with HOURS to spare, I hit the 50,000 word mark!  About 10,000 words after that I finished my book.

It was a mess.  A few friends said they wanted to read it. No way! I wasn’t sure it would even be comprehensible!  But it was done. Beginning, middle and end, all strung together in a row.

I DID IT!

Only One More Week Until November! | LazyHippieMama.com

Just as good, or maybe even better, is that both of my daughters did it with me!  There is a Nanowrimo Young Writer’s Edition that they signed up for.  One finished and one didn’t but I was so proud of both of them and awed by their creativity.

It took every bit of the year since then to edit and re-write and edit and correct and re-write again that heap of words but, because the ENTIRE foundation had been laid out, editing was a much smoother project.  I could fix the issues in chapter 1, knowing what was going to happen in chapter 8.  Just last week I put the manuscript in the hands of a major literary agent for the first time.  That’s still a long way from seeing it on the shelf at Barnes and Nobel but… you know what? I think it may actually get there some day!

Only One More Week Until November! | LazyHippieMama.com

And now we are just one week away from the beginning of November again!

Only 7 more days until Nanowrimo!

No late start for me, this year.  I’m standing at the gate with my outline in hand.  Book 2 is leaking out of my pores. My characters need to live the next part of their story!

If you have a story itching to be told, I can’t encourage you enough to go sign up.  Nanowrimo isn’t an editing system or a writing tool – it’s more like…

Picture a major marathon.  There are people lining the streets cheering the runners on, providing support and encouragement to get them over those tough hills.  There are little stations for the runners to get a drink of water. There’s a festive finish-line to strive toward.  And there are hundreds of other runners on the track with you as you run.

The difference between trying to run 26 miles entirely on your own and trying to do it with the encouragement and accountability of that official marathon structure is the difference between writing on your own or writing as part of Nano.  Something about knowing that others are striving alongside you and having a goal to reach for just makes the whole thing easier and more fun.

Go on!

Just do it!

If you want to be writing buddies, look me up on the Nano site and I’ll cheer for you all month long.

A Review And A Great Deal From Collage.com

Standard

*This is a sponsored post. I have received free trial products for the purposes of sharing an honest review with you.

A Great Deal From Collage.com | LazyHippieMama.comI shared a great deal from Collage.com a few weeks ago and promised a product review when my own books came.

Well, they came and I certainly was not disappointed!  They are beautiful!

The larger book (11.5″x8″ hardcover) has a gorgeous, glossy cover with sharp, clear colors. The pages are thick and reasonably sturdy and the background that I chose from the several offered adds a very nice touch of “pizzaz” around the photos.

In doing the layout I was a little concerned that some of the pages that had 4 or 5 pictures would be too cluttered and the photos would be too small to see but they were just as clear and lovely as the full-page selections.

The smaller book (8″x6″ softcover) was nice as well. The front cover was similar to a glossy print that you would get from a photo developer. The pages were not quite as bright as the larger book but they were still very nice and not at all flimsy.

In the 8″x6″ version some of the photos really were a tad tiny. The quality of printing was still quite clear, they were just very small images. If I had it to do over I would probably only put 1 or 2 photos on each page.

A Review and a Great Deal from Collage.com | LazyHippieMama.com

The process of making the books couldn’t have been any simpler. The collage.com editing system allowed me to adjust the color and brightness of the photos, crop the images and add text within the photo or as a title on the page. It’s possible to put just one photo on a page or to add several, arranging them within different layouts. It didn’t take long at all!

In the end, I got a beautiful “scrapbook” without having to buy a bunch of special paper, stickers, adhesives, hole punchers and more. It was fairly quick, very easy and entirely mess-free.

You can get a great deal  too!  Just follow this link for 51% off a 20-page 11.5″x8″ Hardcover Photo Book From Collage.com.

The Hubs Speaks… “The Top 5 Ways My Wife’s Blog Improved My Life”

Standard

I asked Handsome Hippie Hubby to write a blog post. I swear I didn’t put him up to saying all this. He sure did earn some major Husband Points though! This guy…  he’s a keeper!

Twelve years ago, I married a beautiful woman who, unknown to me, had a hidden identity. Over time, this hidden identity began to surface more and more until one day it came bubbling to the top of her personality and Lazy Hippie Mama stepped forth into the blogging world. When my wife decided to start a blog, I had no idea what she was getting into. I don’t believe she did either. Her writing talents, accomplishments, creativity, passion, sense of humor, and the ability to tell a good story are humbling. She strives selflessly for a better future for our children and all of humankind and is constantly thanking me for supporting her. It always catches me off guard when she does this for two reasons. First, I don’t feel I do very much, and second, I can’t imagine not supporting her. This fairly new venture has improved life in our home in many ways. I wanted to share a few of these improvements.

So here are THE TOP 5 WAYS MY WIFE’S BLOG IMPROVED MY LIFE…

1. It fulfills her, gives her satisfaction and makes her a happier person, therefore, my life is happier. Happy wife, happy life. I try to read all of LHM’s posts and put them on my facebook wall whenever I can. If anything, it’s serious husband points. Also, I can see the joy she gets from blogging. It is a way for her to connect to the world and make a difference. I’m sure many have noticed, she could have been a successful pastor and touched many lives in that way, but I feel this is even better. It’s a way for her to reach out secularly as well as religiously.

2. I have learned a lot through her research and sharing. LHM is always reading and researching. Here is an example of the difference between what we share from our online perusing. Notice the difference…LHM: “Did you see that Brazil is banning Monsanto products?” Me: “Did you know that Clancy Brown does the voice of Mr. Krabs on Spongebob?” Her leisure reading would equal a semester at the local junior college, while my leisure reading may include a Judy Bloom book from 1978.  So you can imagine how thankful I am  when I unwittingly find myself in the middle of a somewhat intelligent conversation on current events and have at least half an idea what is being talked about. She has given me ‘ammunition’ to chime into the conversation as well as a window to the world I otherwise might not have known.

3. We go on new adventures and attend free events which we may not have done otherwise. Lazy Hippie Mama was recently asked to review different events such as Disney On Ice and Lego Fest. Hello!!

4. Her writings inspire me and give me a boost for dealing with life.  Many times unaware, I find myself reading LHM’s posts objectively and have often gone out into the world inspired because of it.

And finally….

5. She mentions me in the blog from time to time as Handsome Hippie Hubby. Now thousands of people get the idea I am good looking. While this may seem pathetically shallow, just remember…you are  right. It is shallow. But hey, I’m only human and who doesn’t like their ego stroked once in a while? Especially by the love of their life?

I realize many of the blogger’s spouses and significant others out there may not relate to this list. But consider the potential blessings right in front of you. Take a moment to count them and, as in all things, your joy will increase as well.

As always, be well, my friends.

Custom Photo Gifts – A VivoPrint Review and $50 Giftcard Give-away!

bannerOK – if you are my parent or my spouse you need to not read this post. Trust me. It’s for all good reasons.  You’ll find out why soon enough just…. tell all your friends to read it but stop scrolling now. Come back tomorrow for What Do You Think? Wednesday. It’ll be great. Thanks. You guys are the best.  I love you!

Now… everyone else… carry on.

Vivoprint contacted me and asked if I would be willing to do an honest review of their products in exchange for some free samples. I agreed, admittedly a little uncertain. I’ve seen similar products from other companies and been unimpressed.

It turns out I had nothing to worry about.  The items I received were gorgeous!

Vivoprint offers phone cases, electronic accessories, and a nice selection of gift/promotional items.  I was looking at items with the idea of giving them as presents but they would be great tools for promoting a business as well!

For less than $50, including shipping, I was able to get 3 great gifts!  The Vivoprint website is incredibly easy to navigate and the instructions for uploading your photos are clear and simple. The trickiest part was figuring out which photos I wanted to use and editing them to fit the shape of the items I chose.

I sent them this photo…

VivoPrint custom photo gifts review | LazyHippieMama.com

And got this great phone case for my mom.  Her 80th birthday is coming up in just a few weeks and she’s turning into an iPhone master. I love that she doesn’t fear technology. She truly is the youngest octogenarian I’ve ever known! I wish that I had a really great camera that could truly show how sharp the colors are. Any blurriness is due to my camera, not the product they sent me. The images are very crisp and bright. I chose the matte finish for the phone case because the description said it made it a little easier to hold on to. The do offer a glossy finish as well.

For my dad I ordered one of the color changing mugs for father’s day. He drinks coffee all day every day so I know he’ll use it and he loves showing off his grandkids. This will make it super easy for him.  The color changing feature fascinates me. I could play with this cup all day.  What can I say? I’m easily amused.

My original (I did have to edit it a bit from this to fit the shape of the cup and add the text, but this is very close to what I used):

Everything came out just beautifully!

One other thing I wanted to mention was the great packaging.  Admittedly, the Hippie side of me cringes at all things styrofoam. That said, we’ve ordered things in the past, from other companies, and been sad to open a box full of broken glass when our products arrived.  These were so perfectly packaged I have to think they could have survived even the most severe weary-postal-worker treatment.

LEGO KidsFest is coming to the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, Michigan and I am so excited to be able to share some of the details with you as well as a chance to win FREE TICKETS!

I’m not sure that many toys can rival LEGO® bricks. Children can not only express their creativity and imagination but learn skills as basic as colors and counting and as complex as engineering. Little ones build fine motor skills by building with LEGO® bricks and for older children the sky is the limit. It is totally worth the risk of the middle-of-the-night risk of stepping on one of those bricks.

Here are the details:

Our Day at Disney Live! – Mickey’s Music Festival

Standard

*** This is a sponsored post on behalf of US Family Guide and Disney Live! My family received tickets in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. ***

Almost time for the sow to start! The waiting is the hardest part.

Almost time for the sow to start! The waiting is the hardest part.

My family was all super excited to see our first ever Disney Live! show.  We’ve always had great experiences with Disney and we were sure that this would be no exception.

We arrived at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland about half an hour before the show started, parked, and followed the signs to the nearest entrance. Unfortunately, it was a door for ticket-holders only and our tickets were still at the will-call window.  Thankfully, the incredibly kind folks running security didn’t make us walk all the way back out into the cold and around the building to the will-call window. Instead, they arranged an escort for us and another family in the same situation to cut through the arena.  It was such a nice gesture!

We got our tickets and went off in search of our seats.

Our one complaint about previous Disney events we’ve attended was that the merchandising was quite overwhelming. Everywhere you looked someone was trying to sell you something at a breathtakingly inflated price.  We were pleasantly surprised to find that, at Disney Live! the souvenir stands were as colorful and festive as ever but scaled back quite a bit and the prices, while not exactly clearance-bin bargain, were slightly more reasonable.

Once we were all situated we had a few minutes to wait. I was totally charmed by the old-fashioned sounding sponsor announcement from Schwebel’s Bread Company that played before the show.

Finally, it was time. The lights dimmed, the countdown began and suddenly Donald Duck was playing the guitar on stage and Toddler-saurus Rex’s head was exploding with joy.

Disney Live Mickey's Music Festival Review

The show was delightful – funny and fast paced with some truly amazing special effects.  Several of our favorite Disney characters made an appearance throughout, singing and dancing to a great mix of Disney favorites, pop music and original songs.  We all laughed at the opening number and we all loved seeing Aladdin’s tricks and the super cool under-the-sea action with Ariel but, hands-down, our favorite scene was when the Toy Story characters came on stage. I don’t want to give it all away so I’ll just say there was some very fancy cowboy (and girl!) roping involved.

The finale was a hand-clapping, foot-stomping, jump-up-and-down blast.

Whether you are 2 or 82 you’ll enjoy this show.  It was all of the fun and wonder you’d expect from Disney.

Monsters Over Manicures – A Monster Jam Review

Standard

*** This is a sponsored post. All opinions are honest and my own. ***

Sweet Hippie Daughter is just not a pink-tutu-wearing, nail-painting, hair-braiding kind of girl.  She isn’t the kind of girl who wants to spend a special night out getting dressed up and sipping tea like a princess.  She’s a big fan of electric guitars and compound bows and, after last night, Monster Jam’s Grave Digger.

US Family Guide offered to send us to Monster Jam at Huntington Center in Toledo, OH. It was a night when Handsome Hippie Hubby had to work so I knew it would be the perfect opportunity for a girl’s night out. As it turns out it was even more fun than I expected!

We arrived and parked in the SeaGate parking garage.  Normally I wouldn’t include that detail but I love that Huntington Center has such a great set up for their parking. It was only $6 and we were able to walk from our car, through the convention center, across the busy street and right into the arena without going outside in the cold.

Once we were inside we found our seats and enjoyed watching the quad races before the show.  The trucks were parked right below us and SHD loved having the chance to see them all lined up like that.

Monster Jam Review

Monster Jam Review

The show was every bit of the noisy, mud-flinging, bone-rattling fun that the Monster Jam commercials promise.  We were glad to have ear protection!  It started out with the trucks seeing who could get their nose the highest in the air. The jumps were amazing to see!  I confess I did have a moment when I thought about how male dogs will prove their dominance by trying to get their pee-mark higher up the tree than all the other male dogs. Appropriately enough, Mega Bite – a dog-shaped truck – won that part of the contest. (I think. Being fairly clueless about the scoring process I got a little lost.)

monster jam jump

We got to see the Quad War races and the Motorcross riders but, by far, the most exciting part of the night was when the truck the girl had picked as her favorite, Grave Digger, rolled over not once but twice!  After the second time, the truck was done for the night and so was the show but the fun didn’t end there…

Monster Jam Review

All of the drivers were available afterward to sign autographs for their fans. The line was massive and we were certain we would be waiting half the night but the folks in charge kept everything very well organized and efficient and everything moved very quickly.  My girl was THRILLED to have the chance to say hello to all of them and get her souvenir signed.  Oh…. and a note on the souvenirs… the last big family event we went to left me with jaw-dropping sticker shock. I wouldn’t say the stuff at Monster Jam was a great bargain, but you could get some really fun items for $10-30 as well as more elaborate keepsakes in a higher price range.  For this mama who doesn’t have a ton of cash to spare, the chance to buy my child something “signable” without breaking the bank meant a lot.

Monster Jam Autographs

A great girl’s night out?  Absolutely! This is an event that is definitely fun for the whole family!

Monster Jam will be in town all weekend and you can still save $5 on tickets using code: TRUCK. Get your tickets today.

Valid on Saturday 2 PM & 7:30 PM performances and Sunday 2 PM performance. Not valid on Front Row, Gold Circle tickets. No double discounts. Service charges, handling and facility fees may apply.

T-RexHi! I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself, if that’s OK. My mommy calls me T-Rex on her blog so I guess we’ll just go with that. I’m 2 1/2-years-old. I enjoy listening to the same song over and over until the grown-ups in my house start to tremble and show signs of a nervous breakdown, turning on Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and ignoring it completely until someone else tries to change the channel, and exploring the flavors of random items I pick up from the floor.

I asked Mama if I could have some space on her blog to share something with you.

You see, there’s this website called, “Reasons My Son Is Crying.”  Mama thinks it’s hilarious.  Every time she sees one of those pictures she starts laughing.

I honestly don’t get it.  I mean, did you see the one where the mom had planted a flower in the pot her son had given her? What was she thinking?! Of course the boy was crying! Who puts a flower in a big clay pot? Poor kid. I feel his pain.

And it’s not like Mamas don’t cry.  I have proof.  I stole Mama’s phone to take some pictures (Oh! I forgot to add, “stealing Mama’s phone to take pictures” to my list of interests). Let me show you what I’m talking about…

She’s always raving about my big sister’s fabulous artwork. I thought I’d try my hand at expressing my creativity.  She was overcome by the beauty of it.

Mama says we are always late for everything. She gives us all plenty of time to get ready but we think it’s sort of funny to wait until she’s got her coat on and then tell her that we have to use the potty or change clothes or grab one more toy.  I’m not so sure she understands the humor.

Mama says she loves to watch the Olympics but every time we turn it on she starts crying: especially when they show the Moms and Dads in the stands.  I don’t get it.  Maybe she’s sad that they get to watch their kids do sports and she doesn’t.  I think I’ll try bobsledding down the staircase this afternoon. That will probably make her feel better.

Mama has a weird fondness for Mexican food. Last week she told us we were going to “Taco Tuesday” at her favorite Mexican restaurant and, when we got there, they were closed and the building was empty. I told her we could just have cookies instead but she didn’t seem interested in that idea. Mamas have weird ideas about the appropriate times for eating cookies.

I tell you the truth, the woman is obsessed with where it is and is not OK to poop. She kept asking if I had to poop. I said no. It was the truth. I was done by the time she’d asked. I really don’t see the problem. Everybody poops. I know it’s true. I read a book all about it.

You know those little rubber things that they put on the bottoms of metal chair legs to keep them from being dangerously sharp?  Those come off.  And then, if you put the chair right in front of the door and everything works out perfectly, Daddy will come bursting through the door just as Mama is starting to push the chair in and the metal edge will rip her toes off and she does this great hopping on one foot move.

She told me to put the Kindle down and go play with my toys, so I did. I played with every single one of them. I even took the flash cards and dominoes out of their boxes! You think she’d be happier. I’m not sure I’ll ever understand women.

Yup. My Mama sure does cry a lot (although, now that I really think about it, I’m not sure that all of the tears in these pictures were 100% genuine), but the very best thing about my Mama is that, even though she’s quick to cry she’s even quicker to laugh.  We don’t always understand each other but no matter what we’ll love each other forever.

Wait!

Before you go, there’s something else I wanted to mention..

Mama’s blog has a great sponsor – Dolphy Games.  I seriously LOVE these games!  They are so cool!  When I click on the little dolphin to start it up it says, “Hello, T-Rex!”  And then there are all these great animals and colorful pictures of things I really like – like beach balls and watermelons.

Some of the games are just a little tricky… they really make me think.  I have to count or remember my shapes and colors but I’m getting really good at them and when I get a right answer the pretty voice says, “Well done, T-Rex!”  I can’t help it.  That voice makes me so happy that I just have to jump up and down and clap.

My big sister has a version for older kids and she loves it, too.

If you liked this post, leave a comment and let my Mama know.  Maybe she’ll let me do another one day.
