A Little Help, In The Middle of the Night (AKA – Stuff to Make You Laugh)

Standard

Chubby Hippie Baby has croup.  Eesh.

At this point, he just sounds sort-of hoarse, like he got little over-enthusiastic screaming at a rock concert or something.  The first night, however, was very scary.  He truly couldn’t get any air and we ended up spending the night at the children’s hospital.

The thing about croup is that kids don’t really seem too bad during the day but, for some reason, nature has played a sick-twisted joke on exhausted parents everywhere, because as soon as the sun sets the symptoms of coughing and wheezing and generally sounding like one is drowning kick in.  Of course, babies don’t rest well while coughing and wheezing and feeling like they’re drowning and, as any parent can tell you, if baby doesn’t sleep, no one gets to sleep.

Being awake around the clock for 4 days in a row gives one a fair amount of time to think… though, admittedly that thinking process becomes progressively more erratic sometime after day 2.

At 4am today, for example, with the 914th episode of Blue’s Clues that I’ve seen in the past few days playing quietly in the background, I thought about how I could help my fellow up-all-night-for-various-reasons parents.  I decided that, if I could have anything at that very moment I would wish for hot coffee and something to make me laugh (for in laughing we cast aside the other choice… crying).

I can’t give you coffee.  Because…  you know…  you are there and I am here.  BUT, I can give you justification to drink more coffee.  I once learned that drinking vast amounts of coffee will, over time, lead you down the path of immortality.  John Tesh told me so.  So, stop hesitating and go pour yourself a cup o’ Joe.  It does the body good!

As for laughter… here you go… 5 things that will make you laugh.

1)  The banana slicer.

A friend of mine recently posted this  link to Amazon where one can apparently buy a tool specifically designed for that oh-so-difficult task of slicing bananas.  Read the reviews.  You will laugh, I promise.

I give you the Hutzler 571 Banana Slicer

I give you the Hutzler 571 Banana Slicer

2) The Backin’ Up song.

This just cracks me up, and I can’t help but admire the cleverness, creativity and available spare time of the people who made the re-mix.  But be warned.  This song will randomly pop into your head and stay there for weeks on end for the rest of eternity once you watch this.

3) What Celebrities Would Look Like If They Moved To Ohio.

Someone emailed this PDF file to me at work and I laughed so hard I cried.

4) Statue attacks.

I think it’s just the idea of Ronald McDonald slapping the crap out of somebody that really gets me.  I bet he ordered the salad.

5) These pranks.

This is one of those things that build and build and gets funnier and funnier the longer you watch.  I think the Jesus humor is the funniest because, for some reason, Jesus humor is almost always hysterical to me.

So there you go.  I hope it helps.  Hang in there, sleepy moms and dads.  You’re not alone and you will get to sleep again…. some day. I think. Dear God, I hope so.    In the meantime, just keep laughing.

BUT WAIT! THERE’S MORE!

6) No More News

Handsome Hippie Hubby said, “You have to include the “no more news” video! It’s hysterical!”  And so it is.  Enjoy!

Happy National Coffee Day!

Standard

Today is National Coffee Day! I LOVE COFFEE! So, in honor of my favorite beverage, I’m re-posting this ode to the benefits of coffee from a few months ago. Enjoy!

Lazy Hippie Mama

So… it’s like this.

I’ve been tired.

I’m not talking about a 2pm slump.

I’m talking about the kind of tired where I’ve dozed off doing my business in the bathroom.  At least I haven’t done my business while dozing off elsewhere!  There is always a silver lining.

I started to explain exactly WHY I’m so tired (it’s not health-related, I promise), but then realized that you probably have better things to do with your day than read 1,000 words about how busy my summers are.

I’ll sum up:

Summers are lots of fun.  We get to have a lot of great family time.  I have the privilege to serve my community in wonderful, enjoyable ways.

Add all that fun and community to a 14-month-old who refuses to sleep and you are left with one Sleepy Hippie Mama.

The only reason I haven’t collapsed in a gooey heap of Hippie?

Coffee.

Lots and lots…

A happy hippie coffee mug if ever there was one!  I think I must find this and buy it!

So… it’s like this.

The only reason I haven’t collapsed in a gooey heap of Hippie?

Coffee.

Lots and lots of coffee.

Pot after pot of the good stuff.

Oh, my dear friend, coffee.  You are truly one of the top 20 best things on Earth.  When God invented you, He was having an especially wonderful day.  You are fragrant and tasty and hot…. but sometimes cold and frothy.  Oh, how versatile you are!

But is coffee good or bad for a Hippie looking to be healthful and mindful of the Earth?

Well…  I have heard some conflicting reports.

I’ve shared once before that, because of coffee, I may live forever.

I have also heard that it will give me high cholesterol and destroy the rainforest.

Being a coffee-guzzling Hippie, I thought I’d look into the facts and share them with you.

It turns out that coffee has a lot of health BENEFITS including lowering the chance of diabetes, kidney stones and gall bladder problems.  It’s also good for the prostate, though, being a woman and all,  I’ve never especially worried about my prostate.

Some research has shown that coffee can negatively affect the condition of the arteries and heart muscle but here’s the thing…

Coffee has something called diterpenes – cafestol and kahweol.  These are, apparently, bad.  BUT… they are very nearly completely filtered out if you use a good quality, unbleached,  paper filter.  Ever get a cup of coffee that looks greasy?  That greasy stuff is what’s bad for you.

Also, a light or medium roast is better, as dark-roasting kills all of the good antioxidants that coffee gives you.

I found a few great articles about the health pros and cons of coffee, here and here.

I also learned that coffee can be bad for the environment.

Traditionally, coffee was grown in small, shady patches.  It was then discovered that greater profit could be made by razing huge stretches of native vegetation, planting coffee in the sun, and then dousing it with huge amounts of chemicals.

That’s about as bad for the environment as you can get.

BUT…

Due to an increased public awareness of this practice, and a realization that the rain forest is our friend, many growers are returning to traditional practices.  If you read the label on your coffee and look for terms like, “Organic,” “Chemical-free,” “Fair-trade,” or “Local Co-Op,” you will find a product that is not only friendlier to the earth, but friendlier to the often-impoverished local economies where coffee is grown.  You can learn lots of details about coffee and its impact on the environment here.

All of that is interesting and good to know, right?

But here is the best thing!

It’s wonderful news!

It should be on every news report in the world!

There are studies that show that coffee reduces the risk of suicide!

I know exactly why that is.

It’s because when you’ve been up until midnight, after a 14 hour day on your feet,  making sure that an event goes off without a hitch, and your baby wanted to play from 3am-5am, and your alarm goes off at 6:30 so you can start all over again….

your good friend, coffee, is there for you…. clearing away the cobwebs and helping you lift yourself into an upright position.

(Coffee Powered Mom, I know you know what I’m talking about!)

I didn’t find any articles about coffee being linked to homicide prevention, but I bet if someone did the research the results would be very favorable.

So, drink that fabulous Dunkin’ Donuts Blend (my personal favorite and, also a Fair-Trade product!) and be healthy and guilt-free, dear readers.

Ahhh… coffee.  I think I’ll go refill my smiley Santa mug right now.

Get your hippie on, dear readers!  It’s gonna be a wonderful week, full of happy surprises in the midst of the busy-ness.  I’ll see you back here in a day or so.

***Coming someday in the future (maybe):  an article on addiction and the benefits of moderation.  But I’m not quite ready to let go of my cup and write that one yet.

John Tesh Makes Me Giggle

Standard

I don’t know a whole lot about John Tesh.  I know that he’s a gifted piano player.  I have vague memories of him on as a tv show host when I was a little girl.

I looked him up on Wikipedia before I wrote this.  Apparently, acccording to many, he’s a magical alien communicating with Others through his music.  There is even a National Anti Tesh Action Agency (or something like that).  I had no idea.  But it may explain a few things.

Anyway….

It seems every time I turn on the radio in the car I hear a bit of “Intelligence for your life” from John Tesh.  These, almost invariably, are tidbits of information regarding various ways that you are going to contract horrible diseases, alienate (no pun intended)  everyone near to you or disfigure yourself.  I think they are intended to be helpful.  Mostly I find them depressing.  (Maybe the Evil Alien Puppet Masters own stock in Zoloft.)

But one night he took it to a whole new level.  He announced, to some 14 million listeners (I got that number from the aforementioned wikki lookup) that

“People who eat a lot of red meat are 10% more likely to die.”

There was no second half to this statement.  Something like, “before the age of 40.” Or, “from heart disease.”  That was the whole thing.

Well!  Nuts!  I had no idea that the road to immortality lie in avoiding red meat! Thank goodness I’m going veggie this week!    Apparently now there is a tiny chance that I’m going to live forever!

Wait! It get’s better!  Just this morning a fellow coffee-lover shared this link with me.  It would seem that coffee drinkers are six times less likely to die.

Ah ha!  I LOVE COFFEE! I think, for my 200th birthday, I’d like a cruise around the world.  And then when I turn 500, maybe a tour of the newest Mars base.  Of course, by then we might all have to be living on Mars.  Especially if we don’t take a little better care of our pretty blue planet.

Blue is so much more flattering to me than red.  Please do your part today to save earth so that those of us substituting coffee for meat can enjoy it ad infinitum.

You scoff?  Perhaps you are right.  Maybe this is all an evil alien plot against the American beef industry.  But even so, I’m rather fond of this earth.  I think she’s pretty and helpful and quite a pleasant place to live.  I’d love for my grandchildren (to the nth degree) to experience her beauty. I hope that we are being good stewards and teaching our children well so that Earth will still be here in 500 years… or 5,000… or… you know.

The reality is that none of us know how long we’ll be here.  No matter how healthy our choices.  But today we are here. So today we should love one another with abandon.  Today we should take time to appreciate the beautiful world.  Today we should enjoy some wonderful music.  After all… you never know how other-worldly it may be.

Enjoy your day!
